Volunteers from a leading East Midlands construction firm have been combining brains with brawn to help youngsters at a Nottingham City Primary school.

Whilst some members of staff from the Clegg Group have been helping children with their reading, others have been building an ‘outdoor classroom’ at St Ann’s Well Primary School.

The area will be used as an outdoor ‘reading circle’ and staff from the company spent two days digging up turf and installing timber sleepers and other materials to create a pleasant learning environment.

Clegg Group Chairman, David Short commented: “We were put in touch with the school through Nottinghamshire Cares which is coordinated by Business in the Community (BITC) and encourages local companies to engage with their communities through volunteering.

As a socially responsible Nottingham business we have been involved in a number of these projects as well as fundraising efforts for various charities in our local area. On this occasion we were delighted to be able to help a school that is at the heart of the community it serves.”

Peter Haywood, one of the company’s Site Managers said: “It has been a real pleasure working with the school and our nine employees who took part have found it to be a very rewarding experience.”

The school’s headteacher, Steve Parry, added: “I would like to thank the Clegg volunteers for all their help. The quality of their work is fantastic and the children have really enjoyed having them in their school. We are also grateful to the volunteers who come into school on a regular basis to help children with their reading. They really do help the youngsters to improve their reading skills.”

“The Clegg Group is an active member of Business in the Community and their staff really help to make a difference through their involvement in our Right to Read Initiative,” said Jackie Fuller, Business in the Community. “The school and pupils really benefit as do the members of staff from Clegg who visit St Anns Well on a regular basis.”
